Preparing for ANSI 5010 and ICD-10
The changes – upgrading ANSI 4010 to ANSI 5010 and ICD-9 to ICD-10 – are required by a new directive from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). That directive makes the same requirement of providers.

Industry experts compare the ANSI 5010 migration to replacing the electrical wiring in a home or business. The new wiring has greater capacity with which to carry a stronger electrical current. They compare ICD-10 coding to that stronger current, which supports more complex activities.  Proper planning and resource allocation to these transitions are critical!

Deadlines
ANSI 5010 – January 1, 2012
ICD-10 ......– October 1, 2013

5 Quick tips to Implementing an EHR:

1. Make a clear communication pathway. Everyone needs to know what’s going on, from the physicians
....to the receptionist.

2. Clearly identify the needs of every provider who is going to use the EHR. The needs of an internal medicine doctor
....aren’t the same as a dermatologist. Make sure the EHR meets those needs.

3. Get a champion for the EHR who will be responsible for talking about the project  and answering questions, and be
....the team lead to implement it.

4. Some people need more time than others. Don’t let a resistant provider stop the implementation. Develop a plan for ....dealing with resisters that includes how you’ll respond to negative comments, how to implement other colleagues
....despite the resister, and how to sell the benefits of the EHR to the resister.

5. Expect the EHR implementation to be time-neutral. Most EHRs don’t save time; their value is in improved patient care
....and documentation, which leads to better reimbursement.
